Research in the area of biological engineering is diverse, interdisciplinary, new, and dynamic. The Department of Biological Engineering at Utah State University focuses on two areas:
- Bioprocess & BioEnergy Research
- Biomedical Research
Our research programs stress the fundamental biological engineering specialties that students need to be successful in any area of biological engineering. Our research projects utilize:
- Synthetic Biology
- Metabolic Engineering
- Downstream Processing
- Tissue Engineering
The Department is committed to providing hands-on laboratory research experiences for all of our students. All undergraduate students are invited to explore each of our laboratories and to join research teams that include graduate students and faculty. Undergraduates, as part of their Senior Design Capstone Project, are required to apply for on-campus research grants. Many of our undergraduates attend national conferences and present posters and papers.
Our approach to research is team-based. Each research team is led by a faculty member and consists of graduate students and undergraduates. We offer summer internships in our biological engineering labs for promising high school students, giving them an opportunity to join our research teams. Here is a schedule of the weekly research team meetings. Interested students are invited and encouraged to attend these meetings.
