Metabolic Engineering Lab

The Metabolic Engineering Laboratory focuses on investigation and engineering of metabolic pathways to generate industrially and pharmaceutically important molecules, and development of powerful biocatalysts for industrial applications.  Current research efforts in the Metabolic Engineering Laboratory under the direction of Dr. Jixun Zhan lie in the interface of three areas: biology, chemistry, and engineering.

Major Professor: Jixun Zhan

Location: SANT 302/302a

Research areas include the discovery and identification of bioactive natural products, biosynthetic mechanisms of pharmaceutically important compounds, characterization and development of biocatalysts for structural modification, as well as improvement of useful enzymes using protein engineering approaches.  Combinatorial biosynthesis of novel biologically significant compounds for drug discovery is also being investigated
