I am currently working on the design and experimentation of a root mimetic system (RMS) that involves growing various bacteria that can be found in the soil on the outside of a hollow fiber membrane (HFM) while nutrients are passed through the inside of the HFM. The RMS will be used to observe and image the growth of the bacteria in real time for any visual responses to variations in the nutrients used. For my Master's thesis I will be developing and validating surface energy characterization methods for HFMs that are used in dialysis cassettes, using those methods to optimize HFM priming, and to asses the impact of a simulated aging process on HFM properties.
