Biochemical Engineering Laboratory

Utah On-Site Wastewater Training Center

This center provides education, training, and technology transfer to installers, inspectors, regulators, and homeowners within the Rocky Mountain Region on the proper design and use of waste water treatment systems.

This laboratory is under the direction of Dr. Ronald Sims and includes 1000 sq. ft. in the Science Engineering Research Building (SER 113). Research conducted at the BE Laboratory addresses chemical mass transport, biotransformation kinetics and mechanisms, and downstream processing related to microbial-based photoautotrophic and heterotrophic systems.

Current projects include pharmaceutical chemical sorption by algae, co-disposal of municipal solid waste and algae for biomethane production, daphnia control and management for algae recovery, and algae briquetting as an alternative energy source of power and heat.
